Bureau of Internal Affairs Reports
The Bureau of Internal Affairs (BIA) investigates, documents, and reviews allegations of misconduct by members of the Chicago Police Department. Allegations investigated by the Bureau of Internal Affairs include but are not limited to: criminal misconduct, operational violations, illegal search, theft of money or property, planting of drugs, substance abused, residency violations, and medical roll abuse.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) investigates allegations of misconduct by Chicago Police Department members related to the use of excessive force, domestic violence, bias-based verbal abuse, and coercion with the threat of violence. COPA also investigates incidents in which a Chicago Police Department member discharges a firearm or taser whether or not misconduct is alleged. Finally, COPA investigates the serious injury or death of persons in police custody.
