Thank you for visiting the Chicago Police Department’s public comment forum for the De-escalation, Response to Resistance, and Use of Force – Suite of Directives. These directives set forth CPD’s highest priority—the sanctity of human life—and CPD’s policy regarding sworn members’ and detention aides’:
- requirements to use de-escalation techniques to prevent or reduce the need for force,
- response to the threat, actions, and level of resistance offered by a person, and
- use of force that must be objectively reasonable, necessary, and proportional.
As part of our ongoing mission to grow trust within the communities we serve, CPD is taking comments from the public on the De-escalation, Response to Resistance, and Use of Force – Suite of Directives beginning on July 7, 2025. The comment period HAS BEEN EXTENDED and will close on September 26, 2025.
Community members can provide input regarding CPD’s current policies or propose revisions or additions to these policies. CPD will regularly review and consider your comments when reviewing and revising these directives. After the comment period concludes, CPD will review the feedback received to guide future revisions to the directives. CPD will consider your comments before finalizing the directives
