Accountability Sergeants and Bureau of Internal Affairs Investigators Receive Specialized Training

March 31, 2025

Accountability is fundamental to the Chicago Police Department’s (CPD) reform efforts. Bureau of Internal Affairs (BIA) investigators and supervisors across CPD play an important role in ensuring misconduct allegations are handled in accordance with policy. Accountability Sergeants, who are responsible for investigating misconduct complaints in their assigned district or unit, and BIA investigators have received specialized training to equip them with the necessary knowledge and resources to conduct misconduct investigations.

The training, which was conducted in the second half of 2024, focused on:

  • Credibility and Standards of Proof
  • Department Member Interviews
  • Evidence Collection & Non-Department Member Interviews
  • Investigation Assignment & Timelines
  • Mistakes and Updates

CPD will continue to provide specialized in-service training to current BIA investigators and Accountability Sergeants. Additionally, all CPD members were enrolled in a mandatory BIA Supplemental eLearning to ensure they are refreshed on the department’s policies related to misconduct allegations.

The Bureau of Internal Affairs publishes regular reports as part of CPD’s commitment to accountability and transparency. To read the latest report, click HERE.
