Women of CPD: Officer Adrienne Seiber

Officer Adrienne Seiber, a Control Tactics Instructor with the Chicago Police Training Support Group, has dedicated over 28 years of service to the City of Chicago.

Working in law enforcement, a predominantly male environment, Officer Seiber stresses the significance of recognizing the women in uniform as they offer unique perspectives, contributions and skill sets that set them apart from their male counterparts. Regardless of rank, Officer Seiber says the presence of women in law enforcement has a profound and positive impact on policing and fosters a dynamic that drives success for everyone.

What’s a challenge in policing that you think women are uniquely positioned to help solve?

Women are generally good communicators and can help to build trust in difficult situations. Being empathetic and displaying patience and kindness can help to de-escalate tense situations. These skills also help support victims and build trust with those they are interacting.

What’s one way you hope to inspire the next generation of women in law enforcement?

I would love to see more women teaching control tactics, firearms, and supervisory roles.

What advice do you have for your female peers in the department, especially the younger female members of CPD?

If you’re patient, diligent and work towards the goal you are looking to achieve, there are many opportunities within this department to advance and get involved.  Don’t limit yourself because of your gender. Work towards your goal and be kind along the way.

What does being a female in law enforcement mean to you?

It means showing up day after day ready to perform a difficult job with strength, capability, professionalism and compassion.  I’m modeling to my daughters what women are truly able to accomplish if they put in the work no matter what profession they choose.
