Women of CPD: Bonita Lee

Bonita Lee, Administrative Assistant in the Chicago Police Department’s Research & Development Division, has dedicated nearly 44 years of service to the City of Chicago.

Over the course of more than four decades, Lee has witnessed the evolution of the Chicago Police Department in ways few others have. She was present for the promotion of the department’s first female Commander, Deputy Chief and first female Deputy Superintendent and many other historic breakthroughs for women within the department.

What barriers do you feel were the most significant for women to break?

Earning acceptance and recognition was one of the biggest hurdles. Women have had to prove they are just as capable, just as driven, and just as deserving of the same goals and achievements as their male counterparts. It showed that success for women in policing wasn’t just possible, but consistent.

What advice do you have for your female peers, especially the younger female members of CPD?

Lean on those with experience and insight. Listen with your eyes and your ears and practice patience. There’s a lot to learn from the people around you, and that support can help you grow your skills and navigate challenges along the way.
