Offender Charged Days After Fatal Stabbing on Blue Line CTA Train Following Swift Investigation

Area Three homicide detectives quickly identified and arrested the offender responsible for a fatal stabbing on a Chicago Transit Authority Blue Line train car, securing charges within three days of the stabbing.

On January 10, 2026, a 37-year-old male victim was seated on the train, which was in the area of the 100 block of W. Lake St. The offender, Demetrius Thurman, 40, approached the victim, who appeared to be asleep, and stabbed him with a large knife before fleeing the scene. The victim was taken to the hospital, where he died.

Detectives were able to recover video evidence of Thurman captured by the CTA’s camera network, and a law enforcement bulletin was issued. Officers assigned to CPD’s Public Transportation Section had previous interactions with Thurman and recognized him as the offender in the law enforcement bulletin.

After another law enforcement alert was issued, members of CPD’s Citywide Robbery Task Force in the Major Crimes Division utilized this information and arrested Thurman in the 200 block of S. Canal St., one day after the stabbing. Additional digital forensic evidence was also recovered, placing Thurman at the scene of the murder.

Thurman is now charged with First Degree Murder, thanks to the internal collaboration between Area Three detectives, the Public Transportation Section officers and the Robbery Task Force members, and the partnership with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
