Public Transportation Section Officers Quickly Arrest Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm Equipped with a Machinegun Conversion Device

Officers from the Chicago Police Department’s Public Transportation Section Tactical Team recovered a firearm equipped with a machine gun conversion device from a convicted felon who attempted to flee across CTA rail tracks.

The officers were conducting a train and platform check at the Clinton Blue Line Station on March 26, 2026, at approximately 8:05 p.m., and observed a male offender, now identified as 38-year-old Alphonzo Jones, smoking on the train. As officers attempted to detain Jones, he pulled away, causing injury to an officer who fell.

Jones then fled the scene by jumping onto the train tracks. As officers pursued Jones, they broadcast his description on police radio to responding units. Jones proceeded to emerge at the UIC-Halsted Blue Line Station and attempted to hide from assisting officers. Officers were able to apprehend Jones and place him into custody. As they were arresting him, officers recovered a firearm equipped with a machinegun conversion device. A further search of the offender also led to the recovery of suspected narcotics.
