ADA Policy
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a Federal civil rights law. It gives Federal civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. It guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in State and local government services, public accommodations, employment, transportation and telecommunications.
Ensuring equal access to police services and facilities for persons with disabilities is required by the ADA. The recent consent decree mandates reforms throughout the Chicago Police Department to ensure the efforts to comply with the ADA.
Everyday members of the Chicago Police Department encounter individuals that have special needs for accommodations. As a department, it is paramount that we strive to meet these needs during every interaction. One particular group covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act are those with language access needs. Special Order S02-01-01 “People with Disabilities” specifically section III/B/3, reminds Department members who require a sign language interpreter to communicate with a person who is deaf, hard of hearing, or has a speech requirement will: contact CPIC to request a sign language interpreter.
